Background

The CHAI Tele-Health initiative was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 to ensure continuity of medical services during a period of unprecedented disruption. Following the successful implementation of a pilot programme during 2021–22, CHAI formally launched its tele-health services in April 2022.

What began as a response to a healthcare crisis has now evolved into a large-scale digital healthcare platform transforming access to medical consultation across underserved and remote communities.

A Growing Digital Healthcare Ecosystem

The CHAI Tele-Health platform is designed to support health centres where qualified doctors may not be physically available. Sister-nurses stationed at these centres facilitate consultations between patients and remotely available registered doctors through the CHAI Tele-Health mobile application.

The platform operates in alignment with the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines issued on 25 March 2020 and its subsequent addendums, ensuring compliant, secure, and patient-centric healthcare delivery.

Technology-Driven Innovation in Healthcare Delivery

One of the key innovations introduced into the CHAI Tele-Health platform is the adoption of voice-enabled ambient listening technology.

Initially, patient details such as medical history, symptoms, vital signs, and previous medications had to be manually entered through the mobile application. To improve usability and significantly enhance the consultation experience, the platform was upgraded with advanced voice-based data capture capabilities.

Today, sister-nurses can simply activate the ambient listening mode and converse naturally with patients in their local language. The application intelligently summarises the conversation and automatically populates the relevant medical fields within the consultation form, greatly reducing the need for manual typing and enabling faster, more efficient consultations.

Seamless Tele-Consultation Experience

Doctors connected remotely through the platform are able to review all patient information and conduct consultations in the presence of the sister-nurse, who also supports local-language communication between the patient and doctor.

To further improve efficiency, the platform provides doctors with intelligent prescription templates for common ailments, enabling them to quickly customise medication dosages and treatment recommendations. This has significantly reduced consultation time while maintaining quality of care.

Significant Growth and Reach

The CHAI Tele-Health initiative has demonstrated remarkable growth since its formal launch in April 2022.

• Expanded from fewer than 30 health centres in 2022 to 627 enrolled centres
• Approximately 400 centres actively use tele-health services on a regular basis
• More than 1,50,000 consultations conducted between April 2022 and May 2026

Impact of the CHAI Tele-Health Initiative

• Improved Access to Healthcare
• Continuity of Care
• Reduced Cost and Time for Patients
• Empowered Sister-Nurses
• Enhanced Community Trust

Driving the Future of Inclusive Digital Healthcare

The CHAI Tele-Health platform represents more than a telemedicine solution — it is an example of how compassionate healthcare, digital innovation, and grassroots healthcare workers can come together to create measurable social impact at scale.

By combining human care with modern technology such as voice-enabled data capture, intelligent automation, and remote consultation capabilities, CHAI continues to redefine healthcare accessibility for communities that need it the most.

Doctors on platform:

Currently 19 doctors are on platform with 6 full-time doctors, provide the consultation services and 13 Sister-Doctors offer voluntary support by making themselves available for the medical consultations as per their individual feasibility.
