CHAI Participates in Consultations on “Good Food For All”
MISEREOR has come up with the theme “GOOD FOOD FOR ALL” with the aim of effectively promoting change towards an increasingly fair equitable and sustainable future for families and neighborhoods across the planet. As part of it, Ms. Anja Mertineit and Ms. Kerstin Lanje from Misereor visited CHAI on 13th Nov., and had initial discussions with Rev. Dr. Tomi Thomas,IMS, Director-General, exploring the possibilities of CHAI’s collaboration on the theme from the health perspective.
As a follow-up, CHAI’s representative Dr. Anto Maliekal participated in a round-table conference on 17thNovember 2014 at Mumbai for brainstorming on the concept of ‘Good Food for All’ (GFA) and sharing various organizations’ experiences and to evolve a future course of action. Seven other organizations participated in the conference to discuss issues including research to define what is Good Food for All, measures to empower women as decision-makers, identifying and documenting the best practices, positive deviances to evolve good models of organic farming, issues of food wastage and comparative analysis of food consumption and health status of Tribal and Dalit communities. Ms. Anja Mertineit, Ms. Kerstin Lanje and Ms. Vera Reininghaus from Misereor led the consultation.
This was followed by a consultative meet on 21st November 2014 at Pune for key partners to further the discussion. Ms. Anja Mertineit shared a presentation of the Misereor working group “Good Food For All” highlighting the global challenges, objectives, message, first ideas and the debate on food sovereignty in Germany. Ms. Kerstin Lanje shared her work on common agricultural reforms and trade practices. Dr. Sameer Valsangkar from CHAI, highlighted the importance of nutrition in health. The recent diabetes study and the rising prevalence of over-nutrition even in rural areas and populations were shared. The decreasing age of occurrence of diabetes was also discussed. Ideas for future co-operation were explored for concerted action among partner organizations.
