DSC00254The inaugural function of “Pratyasha”,  a Holistic Palliative Care Centre, set up at CHAI Training Centre, Medchal, started at 4.30 pm  on 26 April, 2016

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Mr.Raymond Peter, IAS, and Special Chief Secretary Planning & Land acquisition, Government of Telangana.  Most Rev.Prakash Mallavarapu Archbishop of Vishakhapatnam & Ecclesiastical advisor to CHAI presided over the function. Dr. Gayatri Palat Consultant, Pain and Palliative Medicine, MNJ Institute of Oncology and RCC, Hyderabad, Telangana; Sr.Alice Peter, Superior-General, Seva Missionary Sisters of Mary (SMSM) sisters, Chennai; Sr.Deena, President of CHAI;  Rev Dr.Mathew Abraham, CSsR, Director-General, Designate and Rev.Dr.Tomi Thomas IMS, Director-General were present on the dais.

Rev.Dr.Tomi Thomas most cordially welcomed the distinguished guests and the members of the audience. In his speech he said that CHAI will strive to create around 300 Palliative Care Centres in the next three years – CHAI’s commitment to the nation.

The Archbishop while blessing the centre spoke about the need for compassion to be shown to the people suffering from terminal or end-of-life diseases. “Pratyasha” makes a beginning of the Palliative care movement in the country. Dr.Gayatri spoke about the urgent need to focus on developing Palliative care in the country. Sad to say, compared to other countries India lags behind most other countries in giving compassionate care to people. CHAI has taken a great step forward in starting a Palliative care centre. It can go a long way an allaying the pain suffered by end of life patients suffering from terminal illness, she concluded.

It was inaugurated by Mr.Raymond Peter and a woman patient, Mrs.Palugula Andalu, by cutting the ribbon.  “Palliative care is the need of the hour. Centres rendering palliative care needs to be set up adequately in the country so that the excruciating pain suffered by people at the end-stage-of-life can be allayed. And they can helped to die with dignity and peace,” he said. He also lauded the effort of CHAI in starting a palliative care movement.

Fr John Vattamattom, SVD, Director-Emeritus, CHAI, unveiling the plaque said that he felt proud in being part of CHAI for many years. He wished the Centre all success.
