According to World Health Organization (WHO), India is high TB burden country, with an estimated number of 2.2 million cases of TB out of global incidence of 8.7million cases. It is estimated that 40% of Indian population is infected with TB and nearly 800 TB positive die every from India alone.

TB is curable but in a country like India the major challenge is to fight against TB. Our current effort to find, treat and cure everyone who gets ill with the disease is not sufficient as a result 3 million TB positives are missed from by the public health system as per WHO statistics. These people are mostly from poor and vulnerable section of the society which includes migrants, miners, drug users and sex workers.

This year CHAI’s focuses to raise awareness in the community on Tuberculosis care & control through different mass/mid-media campaigns by involving the youth. As an outcome of the seminar on 24th March 2015 the World TB Day was observed by the above mentioned college students through different mass media/ awareness activities. Various activities like Rally, Street play, quiz competition; poster competition etc conducted in different locations of the twin cities by 350-400 students and the faculty. Most of the activities were conducted in the urban slums focusing the vulnerable communities.

The students had oriented vegetable vendors, shop keepers, sweepers, auto rickshaw drivers, payment dwellers, wood vendors and the pedestrians. Through this wonderful initiative the college students were able to reach out to more than thousand (1000) community members. The awareness activities enabled the students to disseminate messages on TB care and control. Along with this IEC materials were distributed to the community members. Innovative skits and songs on TB awareness were also composed by some of the college students. Some of the events were covered by the local news papers.

The college authorities appreciated CHAI’s effort and expressed their interest to join this kind of awareness activities in future towards making the state TB free.
