As part of the GAVI CRS project, CHAI was selected as the facilitating organisation for formation of the CSO network to strengthen routine immunization in the country. CHAI began this project by approaching the lead INGOs and CSOs at the national level to garner their support in this initiative. One to one meetings were held with the lead organisations and subsequently meetings were held to discuss the formation of the Alliance/ network of CSOs at the national level.
By the year end of 2013, a eighteen member National Steering Committee was formed at the national level. This committee was also instrumental in coining a name for the Alliance – Alliance for Immunization in India (Aii) , a logo, a governance charter for its functioning and a national strategy paper to guide the further activities of the Alliance.
The Alliance for Immunisation in India was formally launched at New Delhi on December 2013. Subsequently it formed a National Steering Committee and established four state chapters in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. During the year, the Aii conducted capacity building programs for the CSOs on routine immunisation, advocacy and effective media communication. At the national level a strategy paper was developed by the Aii secretariat and .the Alliance was represented in the pentavalent post introduction evaluation organised by WHO and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. It was also invited by the government to the meeting introducing Mission Indradhanush
The Aii is instrumental in guiding its members and increasing their engagement with the government and other stakeholders. It is now a member of the State Task Force for routine immunisation. The Aii has formed a network of around 180 CSOs.
