CHAI presented two papers at the “12th Global Conference on Ageing” held on June 11,12 and 13 2014, at Hyderabad Convention Centre, Hyderabad. The theme of the conference was: “Health, Security and Community” and focused on issues faced by the elderly population.

The  three-day conference covered various issues faced by the elderly and saw participants from across the world debating on these issues. The conference was graced by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus who is the father of microcredit, the father of social business, the founder of Grameen Bank, and of more than 50 other companies in Bangladesh.

Two papers were presented by the Research Officer of CHAI. One was titled “Telemedicine With Committed Nurses Can Save Lives In Rural Areas: An Initiative Of The Catholic Health Association Of India (CHAI)”, and the other “Palliative Care: A case for the growing need of community-based palliative care in India”.

The first one was presented on 12th June.  This presentation focused on CHAI’s initiatives in the area of Telemedicine and the learning from the pilot project. This was well appreciated as a new technology that could be used to ensure delivery of healthcare in remote areas.

The second presentation was made on 13th June. This paper focused on the need for a community based palliative care in India. With the increase in terminal illnesses and limited resources, a case for community-based palliative care was presented. The paper also focused on the strengths of CHAI to begin this initiative in collaboration with other interested organisations.
